Australian Spiced Pumpkin Pie

Sometimes, you can get slight variation on old favorite, pumpkin pie, the American version.  The Aussies have their version of the Pumpkin Pie. It is made a bit different. But, it is just as good. I am making this for Thanksgiving. It is sort of after dinner with lattes. The secret is you get to be know what is in it.  The Aussies decided to take it to the next level. I learned this recipe about 3 days ago. Bear with me as I try my best to nail it the way I learned it.

Anyhow, this pie says yummy goodness all the way through. It is so Aussie through and through. But, the real secret is seeing the big grins on every ones face while eating. I mean that jello pudding smile like the Cheshire cat that you see people with while eating some. This pie certainly does this treat really well and no one will complain and will ask for second slice to eat.. Let's get cracking the ingredients with the directions. Here they are:

Ingredients

 22 oz  of pumpkin

    1  can evaporated milk

    2 eggs, beaten

1 cup dark brown soft sugar

    1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon

    1/2 teaspoon ground ginger

    1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg

    1/2 teaspoon salt

    For the pastry

    3 cups plain flour

    1 teaspoon salt

    220g butter

    1/2 cup  cold water

Directions

Preheat oven to 400 degrees Farenheit.

Halve pumpkin if necessary and scoop out any seeds and stringy portions. Cut pumpkin into chunks.

In a saucepan over medium heat, cover the pumpkin with water and bring to the boil. Reduce heat to low, cover and simmer for 30 minutes or until tender. Drain, cool and cut away the skin.

Return pumpkin to the saucepan and mash with a potato masher. Drain well, and measure 18 oz. of the mashed pumpkin; reserve any excess pumpkin for another use.

Prepare pastry by mixing together the flour and salt. Rub butter into flour, and add 1 tablespoon cold water to mixture at a time. Mix and repeat until pastry is moist enough to hold together.

With lightly floured hands, shape pastry into a ball. On a lightly floured board, roll pastry out to about 5mm thickness. Transfer to a 9 inch pie dish, gently pressing pastry into the base and up sides.

Cut off any excess pastry hanging over the sides of the dish, and pinch pastry securely around the inner edge.Refrigerate any remaining pastry for another time.

In a large bowl with mixer speed on medium, beat pumpkin with evaporated milk, eggs, sugar, cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg and salt. Mix well.

Pour into a prepared pie dish. Bake in preheated oven for 40 minutes or until a knife inserted in the center comes out clean.

This pie is ready to eat and smells great. Your friends and guest will want more at Thanksgiving. They will have the plate in hand and asking for it hand over fist. It tastes wonderful and blissful that this pie will put those bland pumpkins to shame. It is  simple to make ,as well as, fun, too.

Now, this recipe is available for free and can be download at the link below.

Hypothetical regarding Judge Richard G Kopf if it were in Oz

http://abovethelaw.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/06/220px-Richard_G._Kopf_District_Judge.jpg
Judge Richard G Kopf

I was reading this article about a judge that turned into his daughter,so he could be appointed to the Federal Bench. The crux of the article was him turning in his daughter to get the appointment. I understand that a father wants to help his daughter was involved in criminal activity. But, I thought what if the matter happen in Oz. Would the feeling be the exact same response. This question is one that came up with.

Let's say that Tony Abbott had a judicial nominee that was going to be appointed the next leg up the judicial hierarchy. What would the reaction be if a judge in the same situation had a son or daughter for that matter that was involved in criminal activity. Now, the crux of the dilemma is if you were same spot like you would turn your son or daughter in to get the appointment.  Or would turn your son or daughter in and not take the appointment. I think is interesting question regarding familial relationships and the role of wanting to help but being caught in a spot.

If I had a son or daughter for that matter in the same spot., I would turn them in. But, I would not take the appointment for the simple reason of the way it would look. I don't want to appear selfish.  There is  a difference in wanting to help a loved one and doing it to get a coveted position. There has to be a clear distinction. I guest to how would Australians act if they had a judge in the same set of circumstances.

This question ask what is the most important thing to do. Is it turning a child in to get a promotion or doing the right thing of turning the child in and not taking the appointment. I would the Australian Legal Community this question how would they react if they were in the same set of circumstances.

Here is the link to the article because it does raise issues in my mind.

Judge Richard Kofp's Daughter and the hard choice

Let me know what you about the issue. I think it is good issue and it is one that concerns about where is the line that should not be crossed. How would handle it in the same circumstances.

A Sample Case using American Legal Reasoning For Craig Thomson facing Fraud in Oz.

http://images.smh.com.au/2013/09/10/4734775/ds_thomson729_20130910123406442824-620x349.jpg
Former Federal Labour MP ,Craig Thomson faces 49, faces 173 fraud and theft charges

I read the Sydney Morning Herald and discover that a former Labour MP was engaged in fraud and accused of using Health Services Union credit cards to pay for sexual services at brothels and escort agencies, for pornographic movies at hotels, for flights, food and drink, car hire and other expenses while he was the union's national secretary from 2002 to his election to Federal Parliament as a Labor MP in 2007.

I always love for judical news that can fit the blog and this fits this category. Mr. Thomson will face charges. The court rule that the prosecution can go forward with this case. Magistrate Charlie Rozencwajg  extended Mr Thomson’s bail. He will face charges with regard to while he was the union's national secretary from 2002 to his election to Federal Parliament as a Labor MP in 2007.

He failed to disclose that he was using credit cards assigned the poltical party that he was a member of.  The question he should of though was that every thing is traceable. Whenever you use a credit card and to try to cover up the fact. It just makes the case for fraud even stronger

Let me summarize it in the American legal definition for fraud in this case. Here is how the prosecution is going to prove its case according the legal definition of fraud.  The Australia version of this will be different and learning as I go.

Legal Issue
The issue is whether Craig Thomson committed fraud by failing to disclosed his expenses that being used for sex activities and not legitimate activities related to his campaign to the Labour party.

Elements of Fraud
According the legal defintion of fraud, one has to prove fraud the following elements are required : (1) a false statement of a material fact,(2) knowledge on the part of the defendant that the statement is untrue, (3) intent on the part of the defendant to deceive the alleged victim, (4) justifiable reliance by the alleged victim on the statement, and (5) injury to the alleged victim as a result.

The court will have to determine there is a fraud committed by Craig Thomson. Lastly, the fact will show that he did commit fraud based on the elements of fraud and facts fit the legal definition of fraud.

 Prosecution Side of the Case
Here on the facts, he knowing made a false statement to the commission of his own party by using the credit card and did not disclose what the expenses were meets the element of false statement of material fact. He had knowledge that of his transactions and did not disclose to Labour Party and let them with falsehood that he knew was untrue and meets the element of knowledge on the part of the defendant that the statement is untrue. The Labour party was the unwilling victim of his false statement by him not disclosing his expenses to them at the time the transactions were made and stated something else other what the expenses were. He had the intent to deceive the Labour Party by lying and covering up his activities and having seem like business expenses related to the campaigning establish the element of intent on the part of the defendant to deceive the alleged victim. The Labour party relied is statements to be true and discovered they were not and had been victimized by his misstatements and relied on those statements to be true establishes the element of justifiable reliance by the alleged victim on the statement. The Labour found out  about his misconduct and became a victim of untrue statements of what the credit cards were used on sexual activities that were not authorized by the Labour Party as legitimate expenses and establish the element of injury to the alleged victim as a result. Thus, prosecution has proven its case of fraud.

Defense side of the Case
The defendant will claim the brothels and sexual establishments were not victims and knew that he was engage such activities and did not bother to use his own money. His claim would not be able poke any holes of the elements because the victim was the Labour Party and not the brothels themselves. Thus, he cannot that he did not commit fraud.

Possible Court Conclusion

Craig Thomson did commit fraud because his statements were fraudulent and misled the Labour Party.

Craig Thomas Former Labour MP Faces Fraud

 Also, I used John Delaney's Legal Reasoning,which American based Legal Reasoning. Now, if this were using legal reasoning in Australia I would have layer each element with case rule and citation and the fact fitting the case rule.  The reason is because it suppose to look papers use in court. For our purpose and bar exam purposes, it looks like this in that format. Here is John Delaney Legal Reasoning for Law Exam in American;

As I get further down the law school track, I would put out an Australian version to this same problem. It will look a lot different. I would put it as soon as I can. I will found what it is suppose to look and that you have that in toolbox. I wanted to show the American version of legal reasoning.

    http://www.foodlve.com/pictures/texas-chili-15221522.jpg

When you feel down there is perfect recipe around the corner. I know of just such a recipe will inspire that get up and go. I learned one year at Chili cook off. It was given to my friend David out of San Antonio and won the Chili cook off for 4 years straight in row. This chili will definitely kill the bugs. It is spice are just wait to be savor. This recipe will  wake up you that won't fall asleep because it pure Texas. But, I change one key ingredient to make it an Aussie original. That is pure Aussie Beer. Now, we are going to cook out the alcohol. But, the spices will wake and get the party jumping like a Mariachi band ready to serenade you outside your window. The chili is great for sporting events like football in Oz or American. It is filling and can get the crowd to its feet.

Now, this chili is blue ribbon winner when I got the recipe. I made some sligh changes but it is going to be hit with the crowd to win them over. Now, let's get cracking cooking this and get your taste buds jumping to go to the party. Here is the ingredient and directions:

    Goooood Morning America,

    http://designlap.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/01/lion_2_by_vertical_misfit-d4qocxn.jpg

I was to let the people in the US know that this blog is set up for them. It is not just an Australian blog about Australians going to law school. It is about an American wanting to law school and wanting see a different country.I want to put information and give Americans out there an opportunity to explore other options than the standard advice given to prospective students. It is not being presented. I want this to be an information source for you the read and give you the opportunity to see things from a different prospective. I want to give you another prospective and show that is possible to go a different route to get there and be a licensed attorney in the US. Plus, to be able to be licensed in Australia as well. Think about this if you have a lawyer licensed both the US and Australia, you will get a lawyer who has an international presence. This give that type of person over lawyers just educated only in US school and closing themselves off to a world of opportunity.

This blog is a good information tool and puts out quality information about getting a law degree that is useable in the US and in Australia. Plus, it tells how make and blend into Australian culture with a respect and dignity for it. I want more people to see what this blog can offer them a world of unlimited possibilities. I want people to free their minds and open to beyond a cage where see there is a much larger world. It is time free  minds that and unleash the entrepreneur build the community, and inspire people to think outside the box and challenge people reach beyond themselves to do great things.  This blog is about following your dreams to build better tomorrows for yourself. I want to present this as a source of inspiration and information. There are multiple ways of doing things that you don't have to accept things as they are.

It is about rising to the challenge when others say that is not possible and coming back wowing them at the end. It is about getting people to see beyond and see the bigger picture. It is about how success comes from failure. It is about personal growth and challenging the words "I can't" to "I can do it"

When other are crying failure and sadness in the media and other places, this blog is about hope and doing something about it. Showing that it can be done. It is time to be a noble lion  can roar and not a lamb. It is time strike fear in those who are corrupt. It is time restore the legal profession from a status of failure to one of nobility and honor. For too long, the profession in the US  forgot that it was to serve the people and not to unjustly enrich themselves  while hurting their clients through dishonest means and methods. Legal education in the US today has produced more Justin Biebers and Kim Kardashians that care not for their client and how to serve them best. Today students entering into law school can't tell you the name of the nine people who sit on the US Supreme Court. Nor can they read the opinions coming the court nor do they read the legislation coming from the house where laws are legislated. The legal profession in the US once held the position of nobility  and which was represented the fictional character of Atticus Finch. It was at one the most respected in the world. It has fallen by the waist side only to be concern about one's social rank and what your neighbor has rather concentrating on their client's cases. I am striving to become a noble lion and one that can't be bought nor corrupted. I believe it is time to restore the legal profession of a profession that is noble once again.

It is time be a people of honor and courage. It is time to be noble and upright. It is time to dream not be told that there is only one way in the face of adversity. It is time to set goals and dream big. This world is filled with opportunity. No man can stop an idea whose time has come.

Free Law School Personal Statements For Australian Law School Applications

    http://www.personalstatementlawschool.net/wp-content/themes/atahualpa/images/logo.png

Writing a good personal statement is key to gaining admission to your law school of choice no matter where you are applying to. I have found  13 examples of personal statements that you can use the format on what a good personal statement is suppose to look like and how it should look. The most important when you write a personal statement being honest with yourself as why do you want to go to law school. You are going to invest time and money into this because it is a huge investment of your energy and focus. Most of all, you want to tell the admission committee makes you a good candidate above the other candidates that vying the seat at law school.

Your first statement is your thesis or your main idea. It should flow through your personal statement. The personal statement tells about you and has a form. It has structure that has to be consistent all the way through. It has to flow. You should read and correct it as many times as you need to. But, make sure that it is you in the essay and don't copy what someone has done. Nowadays, there is plenty of temptation to copy and cheat.  I have seen plenty of people copy of other people's personal statements and the admissions committee saw the same personal and copied someone else experience and said that is theirs. This happen to me. I lent my very personal statement for someone to look at  and they copied it word for word when I applied to. I applied to school at Baylor University School of Law. I was furious it was my blood, sweat and tears from my personal life went into the essay that I wrote. I discovered that this person had applied to the same schools practically I had. If you don't think the admission committee keeps records of who wrote what personal statements they do and they do keep it database and match it up to see if it is exactly your or someone that you plagiarized someone's else personal statement. The reason why they do this now is because they are too many dishonest people that think by cheating they can get ahead.

These essays I am putting as freebies are for your own use. I did not write the essays below. But, they were by real law student that were accepted to law school. Also, I felt they are good to gain entrance into a good law school. Also, I will put three paragraphs of my own personal statement so you can see how I open and close the personal statement. I think it is important that you are able to download all thirteen of them. Also, I am going to recommend a book to help. If you need more help with the personal statement. Ann Levine is a licensed lawyer, who helps students with their personal statements.I will put her information out there to you,so you can have it.

Intro To Writing Personal Statements for Law School

What not write in Your Personal Statement to Law School

Here are first 2 paragraphs of my personal and the closing paragraph:

Also, I am not giving the whole thing because of past incident to Baylor. I have been burnt on it because my ex-friend plagiarized my work. I still feel bad to this day for ever allowing it be seen in full.

The first two paragraphs of My Personal Statement:

    First Paragraph

"Unfair". There are many things are unfair.  Battling the unfair, it has been part of my whole life experience.  I had four experiences that fit the description of “unfair”. When most people would become bitter or spiteful or wanted revenged, I decided to over time I would use a skill overcoming things that were “unfair” in my personal life. Most of all, I will gain the tools and experience to learn to the fight “unfair” at law school.

You notice that I use in quotes one word that is the key word that will transition to allow the essay to flow for the rest of the paragraphs of my personal statement.

    Second Paragraph

My very first experience of being treated “unfair” started I was 21. I had a horrific car accident where I smashed into the windshield of a car while riding on a bicycle delivering office supplies during the daytime. I had the right away and was a victim of a hit and run accident. I landed in ditch and could have been dead on arrival at the hospital. I was in terrible pain and had to have surgery to remove a blood clot on the right side of my brain. I woke up three days later to find that had my head had been shaved and a left fibula fracture. I was crying uncontrollably. I remember feeling angry and thought it was so unfair to undergo months of physical therapy and speech therapy. I strove under the pressure to rise to the challenge of handling things that were unfair during the course of my life. Most of all, there are many things are unfair especially when the odds seem so insurmountable, and it is the core foundation of my being to overcome things that are unfair.

Also, you notice that I use the word unfair to transition the concept of "unfair".  This done to highlight and experience in my own how I fought the unfair situation and works well through out the rest of my personal statement.

    My Closing Paragraph

All of my experience has led me to want to pursue a career in law.  I enjoy the challenge and always left me curious about the law. It is my passion most of all. I have learned and mastered these characteristics of persistence, diligence, working smarter, negotiation, thinking critically, being able to write well and speak well. These are the characteristics that I believe that are key to success in the field of law. If I am given a chance, I will work smarter to hone my skills even further in law school in pursue of excellence. Finally, It is for this reason that I wish to pursue this endeavor above all else.

At the end of my closing paragraph is where I tie the whole essay together and state why I feel I am a good candidate for the law school environment. This is the nuts and bolts of it. As you can see how parts of it flow. This is what makes a good personal statement. This information is something that needs to be shown because in Australia there is just not enough information that I found. I decided make it available for everyone. The personal statements are free. You download them and use them to help you write your personal statement.
